That Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex Thingy

Oh yeah, we all know what that is. Just when you get your head around Descartes’ ideas about the mind and ‘our’ physical reality being connected through the pineal gland someone comes along and says ‘no, that’s not quite right. It’s the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex that is the causal nexus’. There’s a reason I chose Philosophy over Biology and I think this sums it up nicely. Anyhow, you can head over to to check out a review of the paper HERE.

On a more serious note though, what do you think of such a connection? Is it more plausable than the pineal gland theory?

It seems that this theme has been taken up by a number of other philosophy related web sites and blogs this week. I’ll just post my favorite reply I’ve read so far.

‘Which utilitarian will be the first to argue that there is an obligation to damage your ventromedial prefrontal cortex? Maybe someone should start a pool.’

From ‘The Garden of Forking Paths’.
